Executive Summary:

Background
The ICT industry has grown rapidly since 2003 and there is a need for computer knowledge and applications in small and big enterprises, schools, churches, NGOs, local and corporate businesses. The government has supported the ICT industry by implementing the policies that have eased the importation of IT equipments at affordable prices. There is however still a challenge of acquiring the skills to empower our communities with the knowledge to make technological advancements. However, access to affordable training centres at favorable terms is a great challenge to this primarily because most of these training institutions are inclined on a profit motive. This therefore cuts out many and even for those interested are hard-pressed in complying with the unfavorable terms. Notwithstanding the above, the need for CAL to develop affordable training centre is paramount.

Vision
To provide affordable line of products and services that makes CAL institute of technology the centre of ICT training.

Mission
Promoting personal development through providing enhanced trainings and access to affordable training in ICT.

 Objectives
  • To establish a modern and well managed training centre.
  • To train the youths in ICT fields that will improve the ICT systems use in Uganda.
  • To improve the lives of the community by equipping them with ICT skills that will enable them improve their earnings.
  • To put in place a demonstration computer training management unit that will help the community to learn how to effectively increase their awareness for economic stability.
  • To empower the community especially the young generation through providing training in ICT that will enable them competing in the job market.

Beneficiaries
The beneficiaries of this project will be students who have completed school (O and A levels) and school drop outs who have an interest in ICT fields like web designing, computer repair and maintenance, secretarial studies, graphics designing and other ICT related fields. We believe these courses will help our graduates start their own businesses and make them self employed than relying on employment as the only way to make a living.

Initial start-up capital and running costs
The initial running cost for the year is estimated at UGX 107,330,000/- (One hundred seven million, three hundred thirty thousand Uganda shillings only).

Market Analysis
CAL Institute of technology intends to bring on board generally students who have completed school (O and A levels) and school drop outs that have an interest in ICT field and other related fields like printing and graphic design, secretarial services, web designing and maintenance, computer repair and maintenance and other related ICT fields.

The Institute intends to start with an intake of sixty students and enrollment is expected to grow through out-reach programs that will be taken to churches, mosques, local councils, schools and other associations. In reaching out to these groups and through providing the best solutions to the training needs, we anticipate the institute to have fully graduated one hundred eighty students and grown to an enrollment of one hundred fifty students per intake at the end of the first year of this project.

Key to success
The key to success in CAL Institute of Technology’s business bases on:
  • Offering innovative products and services. Courses like web designing and maintenance don’t need too much working capital and big working premises will help our graduates break into the market and start their businesses and/or sell their skills.
  • Reliable and timely deliveries. We intend to offer on-site training services to those groups of people who can’t afford to train from our training centre through organizing training workshops. However, this will be on need basis and will depend on the arrangement that is made with the firm/individual(s) requiring this service.
  • Reliable administration that is ready to serve clients, prepare accurate billing, follow-up on orders and other documentation, and maintain a close watch on expenses and collection of accounts receivable.

Income Generation
CAL institute of Technology intends to generate income for running this project through;
  • Directors’ contributions
  • Donor funding

Growth and Sustainability
Growth of the institute will be achieved through;
  • Empowering students with the best skills
  • Recruiting and retaining good and experienced instructors
  • Training in relevant courses that can be readily absorbed in the market and at affordable prices.
  • Putting in place the best training facilities
  • Outreach. Sensitization campaign on the need to train with CAL institute of technology will be taken to the community around the training centre and the central region of Uganda later. We anticipate our admissions to have spread to the whole of Kampala metropolitan city in 18 months and to have covered the central region of Uganda in three years.

Sustainability will on the other hand be ensured by maintaining a pool of resources and generating enough finances to help the day to day operations of the project. This will be achieved through;
  • Students’ contributions in form of training fees. A minimum fee will be paid by students to help the day to day running of the project.
  • Products’ and services’ sales: Students nearing completion of their courses and those who have just completed but still attached to CAL Institute of Technology will offer services to any organization that needs to procure those services. This will help the students in terms of acquiring experience and the income generated from this sale of services will be shared by the students and the Institute.
  • Retained profits. Profits earned by the Institute will be retained for sustainability purposes.

Advantages
The advantages CAL Institute of Technology has over other training institutions are;
  • Affordable training: Unlike other institutions that are profit oriented, CAL institute of Technology seeks to offer training that is affordable by most people. In Uganda, most people undergo training and studies when they are still youth and have not started earning any income, it is therefore against this background that CAL institute of Technology started a training centre with no aim of amassing profits but impacting on the lives and well being of the future generation of Ugandans. Therefore, a minimal amount of training fees will be paid by students to enable in the day to day running of the centre.
  • CAL Institute of technology trains in courses that help graduates become self reliant, than relying on job seeking. Courses like web designing, graphics designing, computer maintenance and repair help the student start his own business after graduation and there is minimum capital involved for start up.
  • Best and experienced instructors: CAL institute of technology employs the best and experienced instructors who will give the best training to these students and thus will acquire the skills needed in the job market.
  • On-site training: CAL institute of Technology intends to start an on-site training to those who cannot afford to train from our training centre like company employees etc. this will be done by organizing training workshops at their places of work or any venue of their choice and at their convenient time thus making training at CAL institute flexible.

Expected output
We intend to start with an admission of sixty students, training in four different courses i.e Certificate in computer applications, Graphics designing, computer maintenance and repair, and web designing and maintenance. These are short courses that take a period of two to six months. We are anticipating a growth rate of 30% in the first year which makes the total number of graduates to one hundred and fifty at the end of the first year. We expect the growth rate to be at 20% per year for the next three years, which makes the number of graduates to increase to five hundred and forty six in three years.
